The mouth harp, also called jaw harp and jew's harp, is one of the world's oldest instruments. It has spread from its origin in the Ural Mountains to most parts of the world in different variations. The mouth harp came to Europe during the Iron Age / early Middle Ages, and finds from the Viking Age have been made in Denmark and Norway, among other places. On Gotland, a bronze mouth harp from the Iron Age has been found.
Our mouth harps are hand-forged by members of the Nepalese musician caste. They have sustained themselves for thousands of years by playing traditional music. Their traditions also include making their own instruments. In modern society, interest in live traditional music is declining. The musicians are therefore today a vulnerable group in an already poor country. Every mouth harp sold supports their work in continuing to live in accordance with their traditions.
