The Gjallar warhorn
The Viking sagas tell how the god Heimdall used his horn to warn the other gods of danger and to bring messages to humans. In Icelandic fairy tales, the horn is described as an instrument of war, used both to control the troops and to intimidate the enemy. Different types of horns have i.a. found during excavations of warships. The oldest finds of a blue horn in Sweden are approx. 2000 years old and thus older than the Viking Age. Our large war horn is about 50 cm long and handmade from natural horn in one piece. With a carved nozzle in the tip. You play it with about the same technique as on a trumpet.
